Acupuncture for Heel Pain

A new study concludes that acupuncture is effective for the treatment of plantar heel pain. The researchers note that acupuncture treatment clinical outcomes are comparable to the use of medications, night splints and stretching as evidenced in multiple studies. The researchers also note that results demonstrate that acupuncture has more significant improvements in both pain relief and the restoration of function than a standard regime of care that includes non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Based on these findings, the researchers formally recommend acupuncture for the treatment of plantar heel pain. Heel pain is caused by a variety of conditions. The most typical causes of heel pain are baxter nerve compression, plantar fasciitis, fat pad atrophy,...

Acupuncture Controls Blood Pressure

Researchers from the University of California, Irvine mapped the mechanisms by which acupuncture regulates blood pressure. The study demonstrates that acupuncture stimulates chemical reactions in the brain that modulate the nervous system. This gives acupuncture the ability to control both the heart rate and blood pressure. The researchers conclude that electroacupuncture normalizes “elevated and depressed blood pressure” and regulates both the blood pressure and heart rate through GABA receptor mechanisms that modulate the sympathetic nervous system and vagal excitation. The researchers measured these effects in a study of electroacupuncture to acupoints P5 and P6, located on the forearm. Acupoint P5, located on the flexor aspect of the forearm approximately...

Acupuncture Reduces Cancer Pain

Acupuncture relieves cancer pain due to medication side effects according to new research conducted at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. Treatment for multiple myeloma (MM), cancer of plasma cells that affects bone marrow, is treated with the pharmaceutical drug bortezomib. Peripheral neuropathy, damage to peripheral nerves, is a common side effect causing pain in cancer patients taking bortezomib. The new research finds that acupuncture is effective for relieving peripheral neuropathy pain due to bortezomib intake in cancer patients. This finding affects cancer treatments in that bortezomib induced pain is a dose-limiting factor. The researchers conclude, “Acupuncture is a viable treatment option for MM patients experiencing painful...

Acupuncture Combats Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

The NCCAM (National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine) reports that acupuncture demonstrates effectiveness in the treatment of PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder). PTSD is an anxiety disorder that may occur after violent assaults, military combat, disasters, or any incident in which severe physical harm is threatened. In a randomized controlled study, Dr. Michael Hollifield, MD, and his team at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, Kentucky; concluded that acupuncture yields beneficial therapeutic results similar to that of cognitive-behavioral therapy. Acupuncture is gaining wide acceptance in areas where both physical and mental trauma are serious issues. Doctors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington now...

Acupuncture Points Successful for Infertility Treatment

New research finds acupuncture effective for the treatment of infertility. A meta-analysis of research literature conclusively documents multiple studies demonstrating the effectiveness of acupuncture for the treatment of infertility. Moreover, researchers determined common acupuncture points across multiple studies that show effectiveness in promoting fertility. Acupuncture for InfertilityThe comprehensive analysis of fertility treatments revealed that four key acupuncture points, located on the abdomen and leg, were significantly effective. Acupuncture points SP6 (Sanyinjiao), CV4 (Guanyuan), CV3 (Zhongji) and Zigong (Ex-CA1) demonstrated clinical efficacy. The results do not come as a surprise to many Registered Acupuncturists. The four acupuncture points are...

Acupuncture Reduces Hip Surgery Pain

Acupuncture reduces the pain and complications caused by total hip replacement surgery. A new clinical investigation of acupuncture applied during total hip replacement surgery demonstrates that acupuncture reduces postoperative pain, reduces the need for medications and prevents complications such as nausea and vomiting. In addition, the research concludes that acupuncture improves the clinical outcome of the surgery by improving hip joint function. A nearly 2.5 year study of 60 patients compared a control group with an acupuncture group, 30 in each group. All patients had late-stage osteonecrosis of the femoral head and received total hip replacement surgery. Acupuncture points used in the study were applied to the outer ear region at acupoints Shenmen,...
